Choosing the Right Stroller and Carseat

By Sarah Jones - May 7, 2008

New moms and dads have a lot to worry about when buying for a new baby. Items should be safe, secure, and should be pleasing to the eye. Other than nursery furniture, strollers and car seats are probably a new families biggest concerns. Car seats are essential, as you can't leave the hospital without one, and strollers offer new moms away to get some much need exercise with baby in tow. When buying strollers and car seats, you have to put safety first. Buying these items used is not usually a good idea, though for some families, this is their only option. Used strollers and car seats can have defects that can harm your baby. A used car seat may have been in an accident, and have internal defects that compromise its integrity. If you are involved in an accident with a faulty car seat, your baby may not be as protected as you would like. Used strollers may have wheels that are about to fall off, or parts that may poke your baby. If you buy used, make sure you look the item over very carefully to be sure the item is in tiptop shape. If you are looking for new strollers and car seats, you should look somewhere that specializes in baby furniture and accessories. You may find great deals at places like Burlington Coat Factory or Toys R Us. Before you shop, print out a list of recalled models. Most stores pull these items immediately, but there is always the off chance that something was missed. This is important when looking at used items, because the seller may have no idea there was a recall. If you want to shop online, you may find a great variety of strollers and car seats from which to choose. Just make sure you check out any warranty information, and have a look at the shipping costs. When you add shipping costs, it may be cheaper to buy locally. However, if you find the perfect strollers and car seats for your needs, it may be worth the extra money for shipping to get exactly what you need. If you are shopping on eBay, make sure you ask the seller a lot of questions, especially when it comes to car seats. Ask about the history of the item, and how long it was used. Garage and yard sales are also great places to buy, but again, make sure you ask questions before purchase.
