Get Closer To Your Baby

By Carol Orton - Aug 27, 2008

These are some great tips that will bond you and your baby closer than ever.

#1- Giggling is Serious Business
Newborns do laugh regardless of what some old wife has told you. It’s a good sign of emotional development as well. The more the better so don’t feel too silly when you coo, giggle, laugh and do all that babbling stuff with your newborn. Your baby is growing emotionally. Don’t forget the cuddling too!
#2- Eye-To-Eye
Making direct eye contact is a sign of security and engagement. As your bond grows you’ll notice your baby gazing at you more often. It’s a sign of growing confidence and trust in you. You’ll also notice your baby looking away from time to time to process what is being seen.
#3- Gentle Massage
Massage is a fantastic tool in developing a strong, positive parent-child bond that helps form the basis for positive future relationships. Regular massage helps encourage physical and emotional health, which fosters a sense of contentment and well-being. It promotes better and longer sleep patterns, reduces effects of stress and enhances overall health.
#4- The More, The Better
There’s no such thing as too much interaction with your child except of course, you decided you just can’t get enough and wake them up in the middle of the night just to hang out. Honestly, I’ve never heard of anyone doing that. For the first few months of life lots of closeness between parent and baby helps ease the transition into this new world. Holding, cuddling, massaging, hearing your heartbeat-it all creates a secure, warm environment which helps development socially and emotionally.
#5- Love Language
You and your child develop a language of your own. Before babies can even talk they develop quite a vocabulary of gestures, noises and expressions to communicate. You’ll begin to understand even the smallest difference in a cry or movement or expression or gesture. Your baby notices your changes as well and will start to respond to your touch and your voice in different ways that only the two of you will understand.
#6- The Story of Pete and Re-Pete
Babies love repetition. It’s how they become familiar and secure with all the new surroundings. They are learning everything for the first time so patterns and routines help them process things. Their appetite for stimulation is endless. This is why establishing an everyday schedule is so important for them.
#7- The Cost of a Cuddle
Your baby is completely impressionable. The more you touch your baby the more likely it is you will get a return on your investment. Your child’s greatest teacher is you so whatever you model they will study and imitate. This helps develop invaluable communication skills. They learn to take turns, how to pause, how to take social cues and more buy imitating your model.
#8- The Chocolate Bond
Bonding is like a box of chocolates. It’s true. The brain’s pleasure centers triggered are the same when eating chocolate as when bonding. Parents are wired to get enjoyment out of bonding as well. Touch, massage and comfort food all affect the same hormone that is triggered when eating chocolate.
Just as your touch soothes your baby, you’ll notice that giving a massage also helps promote a sense of calm and relaxation for you too!
#9- Comfort Scents
The sense of smell is one of the most powerful senses. The unique scent of your skin is one of the first scents your baby smells and this scent imprints a reassuring, beloved fragrance throughout life. Your baby will associate other smells as well such as breast milk, lotions, foods and soaps to you as well providing a feeling of comfort and “home” even when you’re apart.
#10- Irreplaceable You
Your touch is irreplaceable! Your heartbeat, feel, scent, look-everything about you feels like home to your baby. Babies thrive on loving touches by anyone but a mom’s touch is special. Your body has been a comforting “home” for nine months, and has provided nourishment ever since. You’re irreplaceable!
