How Does Twitter Fit In With Your Marketing Plan?
By Wayne Boesiger - Jun 20, 2010
Twitter should be used, to some degree, in conjunction with any website, whether that's business, personal or political. Twitter is one of those tools that if you give, you get. If you do nothing but spam tweet, use automated tools and never put up a tweet that is not business natured, you will eventually fall by the way side. In our company, we do not spam tweet or use automated tweet thank you messages. Rather, we teach our clients a pattern of tweets that we use (and what to put in them) that consistently increase followers and, therefore, increase traffic to our client’s websites and blogs. It's a little more time-consuming, but the results are more than worth it.
Companies of all sizes can use Twitter for marketing or communication with their employees. The speed of it (when it's not over capacity) makes it a great way for people to communicate, even when not around each other. You can use it for mass announcements, changes in a schedule, promotion announcements. Anything that is short, but important, can be used by human resources is a lot less time than it takes to set up an email.
Twitter can be a key component of the other types of marketing you should be doing for your website. Too many businesses look to twitter as its savior. Twitter can get your articles out to people. However, if you are not publishing the right time of day, it's not nearly as effective. Also, twitter cannot take the place of effective back linking, article and video publishing.
Twitter is like the frosting on a cake. It is why we go eat the cake in the first place. However, without the cake, you would not eat the frosting...at least normally...I actually like frosting from the can sometimes, but it's still gross!!
Announcing sales you may be having or attaching an article about a new product being launched are just two of the ways that twitter can be used to drive traffic to your site or landing page. Make sure and, once in a while, purge some of the dead contacts in twitter so you can get new followers who would be more apt to be interested in these sorts of announcements.
Also, while you are being efficient with twitter, you are still keeping it personal. One of the things we advise and practice is putting your URL in each tweet, rather than the shortened tweet code. So many people use that code that using the URL automatically makes you stick out.
Twitter is very flexible for marketers and business owners to use. As part of an integrated campaign, it can really help you with consistent traffic. Just remember...you have to give to get. This is one of the maxims you will always hear from our company. This is true, not only with Twitter, but with everything else on the internet.
